Allergies

Allergies come in two basic forms: pollen allergies and food allergies. Each is caused by an immune over-reaction that targets basically harmless material causing inflammation. Inflammation of the mucous membranes causes swelling and leakage of plasma. Histamine release causes itching. There is also a theory that allergies can cause inflammations or abnormal tissue reactions elsewhere in the body. The brain is one example and various problems such as ADD are thought to be caused by food allergies in at least 66% of the cases. Many other problems seem to have an allergic component, also.
Pollen allergies often cause asthma, along with the usual runny nose, itchy eyes and so on. Both conditions indicate a body that needs detoxification and attention to correcting immune dysfunction.
Food allergies are caused when the body reacts to the antigens in food, or when it is allowed to gain access to the bloodstream and cause circulating complexes after combining with antibodies.
Food allergies are reported to be the root of many illnesses.

Allergies; symptoms

* Itchy, red swollen eyes
* Stuffy or runny nose
* Frequent sneezing or cough
* Blisters on the skin
* Dry skin
Neem inhibits allergic reactions when applied to the skin. Neem compounds inhibit the stimulus produced by histamine and may be helpful in skin rashes and bronchial allergy.

Treatment
Application of a neem-based cream, oil or leaf extract will stop the itching and inflammation of rashes. Neem tea or capsules may be taken internally for allergies to pollen, molds, etc.

Suggested Products: - Neem mist, de-odorized or standard oil, Blitz stick, capsules, and leaf granules (for extract)

Candida

This is a vaginal infection caused by the Candida albicans fungus. It is also commonly known as vaginal thrush or yeast infection.
Candida albicans is a naturally occurring fungus, which is usually found in the moist parts of the body such as the vagina. The body is usually able to keep the growth of yeast under control, but sometimes the yeast takes over, resulting in an infection. When such an infection occurs in the vagina, it is called a vaginal yeast infection.
If you have a vaginal yeast infection, you may experience one or more of the following:
·A thick, cheese-like vaginal discharge.
· Burning or itching around the vagina.
· Burning sensation when urinating.
· Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse.
· Swelling of the vulva (the female external genitalia).
It is estimated that around 75% of women experience them at least once in their life.
There are a number of factors, which make a woman more susceptible to vaginal yeast infections:
Taking antibiotics:
The growth of yeast in the vagina is kept under control by certain 'friendly' bacteria. Antibiotics kill these bacteria, allowing the yeast to take over.

Pregnancy and the contraceptive pill:
Both of these things bring about hormonal changes, which can alter the pH balance in the vagina making it more alkaline. Yeast thrives in an alkaline environment. Older, higher dose oral contraceptive pills may also increase a woman's susceptibility to vaginal thrush.

Diabetes:
This raises the sugar content in your blood and urine, which encourages the growth of yeast.

Stress:
Women who are under stress from a poor diet, an illness or lack of sleep are more susceptible.

A weak immune system:
If your immune system has been weakened by something like chemotherapy, you may be more susceptible to vaginal yeast infections.
If properly treated, the majority of vaginal yeast infections are gone within two weeks. Sometimes it only takes a few days. If left untreated, these infections can persist for years.
Bathing in warm, salted water is very soothing. You should avoid all chemicals, such as bubble bath. Avoid tights or tight-fitting clothing.
If you are sexually active simultaneous treatment of your sexual partner to prevent re-infection is recommended. Men may carry a yeast infection without suffering any symptoms themselves.
There are a number of things that you can do to help prevent vaginal yeast infections:
· Keep the external genital area clean and dry.
· After washing, pat the area dry.
· If you have been swimming, change quickly into your dry clothes.
· Wear loose cotton underwear.
· If possible, do not wear underwear in bed in order to give your genital area a breather.
· Avoid irritating soaps, bubble baths and shower gels.
· Wipe front to back after urinating.
· Avoid the perfumed sanitary pads and tampons as the perfume may cause irritation.
· Avoid antibiotics.
Many women experience more than one vaginal yeast infection in their life.
If your vaginal yeast infection keeps recurring, visit your doctor.

In healthy people, the yeast Candida albicans normally exists on the surface of certain moist areas of the body, including the mouth, throat, and vagina. Sometimes, the fungus overgrows in localized areas, causing minor forms of candidiasis such as oral thrush and vaginal thrush. However, in people who have reduced immunity, infection can spread throughout the body and this may also occur in people who have had prolonged courses of antibiotics or use intravenous drugs.

Neem and Candida
Neem leaf capsules or tea will promote healing and reduce the pain/ inflammation. Children under 12 should only gargle with the tea and not take capsules For the redness appearing on the skin around the mouth, a neem-based cream should be applied regularly until the infection has cleared.

Treatment.
For infections of the skin, rubbing a neem-based cream or bathing the affected areas will relieve the itching, heal the skin and get rid of the infection. For vaginal yeast infections, a neem-based cream can be applied with cotton swabs or douche with neem leaf extract. Drinking three cups of neem tea or 2 capsules for several days will help rid the body of both external and internal infection.

Suggested Products: - Neem 40 aru cream, de-odorized or standard oil, Blitz stick, capsules, Neem 40 bubble bath, and leaf granules (for extract/tea)

Skin Fungi

Neem's Effects against Fungi
India's tropical climate especially in the coastal regions creates the kind of humid hot house atmosphere that funguses thrive in. Traditionally, in Ayurveda, Neem seed oil, aqueous extracts of Neem leaf, Neem leaf powder, the smoke from burning dried Neem leaves, and Neem leaf pastes have been used for the prevention and treatment of fungal conditions in India.
Athlete's foot, ringworm, and Candida, which causes vaginal yeast infections and thrush, are some of the more common fungi that attack humans. There are two medicinal compounds in the Neem leaf, gedunin and nimbidol, which have been clinically proven to control these fungi. Jock itch, another fungi that attacks humans, has been treated traditionally in India for thousands of years with Neem seed oil and aqueous extracts of Neem leaf. Creating medicinal smoke by burning dried Neem leaves, is an ancient practice in Ayurveda for purifying the atmosphere around a seriously ill patient. A clinical study examining the efficacy of this ancient practice found that smoke from burning dried Neem leaves exerted an extreme suppression of fungal growth and germination.
Amongst the thousands of Ayurvedic medicinal plants in India, modern clinical research has now proven that Neem extracts contain some of the most powerful antifungal compounds against certain fungi.

Neem extracts are some of the most powerful anti fungal plant extracts found in Indian pharmacopia against certain fungi (Khanna and Chandre, 1972); (Chary, et al, 1984).

In particular, research has shown that the compounds gedunin and nimbidol found in the neem leaf control several fungi which attack humans, including those that cause athlete's foot, ringworm, and even controls Candida, an organism that causes yeast infections and thrush (Thindand Dahiya, 1978); (David, 1965); (Murthy and Sirsi, 1958b); (Khan and
Wassilew, 1987); (Khan, et al, 1991); (Kher, 1972).

Compounds found in neem leaf called quercetins (flavanoids) are effective antimycotics. (Khan et al,1988)

Two researchers, basing their study on the ancient tradition of using neem to purify the air around the sick, have found that neem smoke exhibited extreme suppression of fungal growth and germination (Upadhyay and Arora, 1975).

Neem has proved effective against certain fungi that infect the human body. Such fungi are an increasing problem and have been difficult to control by synthetic fungicides. For example, in one laboratory study, conducted by Khan and Wassilew 1987, Neem preparations showed toxicity to cultures of 14 common fungi, including members of the following genera:
· Trichophyton  an 'athlete's foot' fungus that infects hair, skin and nails;
· Epidermophyton  a 'ringworm' that invades both skin and nails of the feet;
· Microsporum  a 'ringworm' that invades hair, skin and (rarely) nails;
· Trichosporon  a fungus of the intestinal tract;
· Geotrichum  a yeast like fungus that causes infections of the bronchi, lungs and mucous membranes;
· Candida a yeast-like fungus that is part of the normal flora but can get out of control, leading to lesions in mouth (thrush), vagina, skin, hands and lungs.

Athletes foot
Athlete's Foot is one of the most common forms of fungal infections in the human environment. Athlete's Foot is generally contained to the area between the soles of the feet and the toes. This mild fungus is usually picked up in warm, public facilities, such as showers, swimming pools and gymnasiums.

Neem and Athletes foot
Neem has been found to be effective against athlete's foot. Fungal infections of this type affect nine out of ten people in the United Kingdom at some time or another. Untreated, this fungus can attack the toenails and even cause secondary infections throughout the body. A corn starch powder combined with powdered neem leaves makes an excellent preventative while a neem-based lotion or bathing in a oil/leaf extract can be used if an infection has already begun

Prevention:
Athlete's Foot is easily preventable. Keeping feet cool and dry, especially during warm summer months. Using neem bubble bath, soap, or lotions is the easiest way to prevent Athlete's Foot. Those prone to excessive perspiration can purchase special socks which helps to wick wetness and keep feet dry..

Ringworm
Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus that can affect the scalp, skin, fingers, toe nails or foot. Affecting the smooth skin and scalp, these fungal infections are often accompanied by profound itching and redness of the affected skin. This fungus produces circular ring lesions up to six inches in diameter on the skin and can cause loss of hair in patches of the scalp.

Ringworm and Neem
Neem has historically been an effective treatment for fungal infections. Early studies verified scientifically that the fungus that causes ringworm is effectively controlled with neem extracts. In one trial, patients with long term and severe cases of ringworm were selected for study. They had used commercial ointments containing salicylic acid and benzoic acid for over three years yet had failed to stop the infection. They were each treated with alcoholic neem leaf extract in a carrier cream. Within just two to three days after using neem extract on the areas the patients were clear of the infection and remained so for the one year follow-up period. Washing with neem soap or shampoo and rubbing neem cream onto the affected areas clears this infection in several days.

Treatment.
Although fugal infection may be localized spores can lodge on other parts of the body and/or clothing. Bathing is recommended to treat the entire body and leaf extract (produced akin to tea) used to rinse shoes, which tends to be the pre dominant area for spores. Care must be taken as extract can stain. Clothes should be hot washed or dry cleaned.

Suggested Products: - Neem oil & bubble bath, Neem 40 Mist, Shao shampoo, and leaf granules.

Itching sensitive skin (Anti-inflammatory)

Applying a cream containing neem oil topically has been used for centuries to reduce inflammation. A compound called sodium nimbinate found in neem leaves has been shown to provide significant relief to inflamed tissue. Other compounds such as nimbin, nimbinin and nimbidol are comparable to cortisone acetate in reducing inflammation.

Suggested Products: - (Dependant on area and size) Blitz stick, Mist, Oil & bubble bath, Shao shampoo.

Arthritis

Traditionally Ayurveda has recommended the use of Neem leaf, seed, and bark, for reducing arthritic pain and inflammation and for halting the progression of the disease as well. The use of Neem for these purposes has been confirmed by modern clinical studies.
The pain, inflammation, and swelling of the joints in arthritis can be greatly reduced by different compounds in Neem. In numerous clinical studies the polysaccharides and other compounds of Neem leaf extract have produced a reduction in the inflammation caused by arthritis. One of the major components in Neem seed, which has demonstrated a significant effect against arthritis, is nimbidin. Other components that possess anti-inflammatory properties are limonoids and catechin.
There are several reasons why the compounds in Neem work so well. It appears that these compounds make a number of adjustments to various mechanisms in the body, which explains their anti-inflammatory effects. There is an inhibition in the release of mediators of acute inflammation, an antihistaminic effect, and a modification in the functioning of the immune system response. This last effect is extremely important. Neem's ability to change the way the immune system responds to arthritis, by reducing the generation of inflammation producing chemicals, may also be the reason why it halts the progress of the disease and why it may hold the promise of an actual cure.
In addition to its anti-inflammatory effects there are several leaf compounds like the above mentioned polysaccharides, catechin, and limonoids, which are clinically proven to be more potent than aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) in decreasing prostaglandin synthetase and the pain it causes.

Arthritis is a term covering many types of joint ailments. The ailments can be autoimmune disorders, infections, the result of wear on the joints or simply inflammation. Generally though it is the inflammation or the pain associated with it that is treated regardless of the origin. Neem can aid in treating arthritis in many ways. Neem's antibacterial properties can help kill infectious causes while its inflammation reducing properties and pain-suppressing properties can alleviate the symptoms. Neem can also help create a balance in the immune system, which directly affects progression of the disease.

Arthritis is one of the most common medical problems. There are more than 100 forms of it, and each has varying causes, symptoms and treatments.

Warning signs of arthritis include:

  • Swelling in one or more joints
  • Prolonged early morning stiffness
  • Recurring pain or tenderness in any joint
  • Inability to move joint normally
  • Redness and warmth in a joint
  • Unexplained fevers, weight loss or weakness with joint pain.

Any of these signs, when new, that lasts for more than two weeks requires prompt medical attention. Distinguishing arthritis from common aches and pain, along with determining the type of arthritis, is important for treatment.
Common types of arthritis include:

Osteoarthritis.
Caused by normal wear and tear on the joints, this chronic condition is usually not serious. However a joint may degenerate to the point where replacement surgery is needed.

Rheumatoid arthritis.
A type of inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition caused by the body's immune system attacking joint-lining tissue.

Rheumatism:
Rheumatism or Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition that can cause serious pain and inflammation. Modern medicine uses strong drugs like phenyl butazone and cortisone to relive the pain and inflammation of Rheumatism, however these drugs can cause many uncomfortable side effects. Clinical studies have conclusively demonstrated that the anti-inflammatory activities of various compounds in Neem leaves are equally as effective as phenyl butazone and cortisone.
In addition to relieving pain and inflammation the active constituents in Neem leaves are clinically proven to inhibit the prostaglandin mechanism, that causes pain, more effectively than aspirin. In the same study Neem significantly reduced acute paw edema as well. The consumption of Neem Leaf capsules and the topical application of slightly warmed Neem cream can help to alleviate the pain and inflammation of this condition.

Infectious arthritis.
Infectious agents include bacteria, fungi and viruses. This type of arthritis can affect anyone. Usually, prompt diagnosis and treatment results in recovery.

Psoriatic arthritis.
Psoriatic arthritis is a specific type of arthritis that develops in approximately 23 percent of people who have psoriasis. The disease can be difficult to diagnose, particularly in its milder forms.

Gout.
Gout is most common in men older than 40 and is caused by formation of uric add crystals in a joint.

A number of studies indicate the usefulness of neem in treating arthritis.
The long history of using neem leaf, bark and seed extracts to relieve inflamed joints is borne out by the recent scientific investigations. Treatment for arthritis is traditionally a mild neem leaf tea coupled with rubbing neem oil or warmed neem-based cream on the stiff or painful areas as needed.

Treatment.
Unfortunately bone loss cannot be replaced and in advanced cases, joint replacement may be the only option. Neem can help with pain and slow the progression of the disease. Neem capsules or tea along with massage of oil around problem areas are the recommended treatment.

Suggested Products: -Neem capsules, Neem leaf, and Neem oil.

Virus (Anti-Viral)

Neem is one of just a few known anti-viral agents. In a study on neem's effectiveness as an anti-viral agent, neem seemed to interact with the surface of cells to prevent infection by the virus thereby inhibiting multiplication of the virus. Similar results have been observed in studies of other viral pathogens indicating a unique property of neem to prevent viral disease.

Neem's Effects against Viruses
There are certain compounds in Neem that demonstrate a unique ability to surround viruses, which prevents them from causing infection. Neem also inhibits viral multiplication by interacting with the surface of the cells to prevent the cell from becoming infected by the virus. Neem has been observed to be effective against a number of viral pathogens in various clinical studies demonstrating it contains unique properties to inhibit viral disease. Neem is one of just a few known antiviral agents.
Chickenpox, shingles, herpes, and hepatitis are viral conditions, which have been successfully treated, in clinical studies by Neem's therapeutic compounds. The uncomfortable symptoms of colds and flu's can be relieved during seasonal changes by the regular consumption of Neem Leaf capsules, extract, or tea.

Chickenpox
Chickenpox, sometimes called varicella, is a common viral infection that mostly affects young children. The infection, with its characteristic rash of blisters, is caused by the varicella zoster virus, which also causes herpes zoster. The virus is easily transmitted in airborne droplets from the coughs and sneezes of infected people or by direct contact with the blisters. You can catch chickenpox from someone who has either chickenpox or herpes zoster if you are not immune.

Treatment.
Neem capsules or tea.

Suggested Products: -Neem capsules and/or Neem leaf for tea.

Dandruff

Is a form of dermatitis / psoriasis. Usually associated with imbalance in hormones, infections, or diets rich in fats and sweets, dandruff can only be controlled, not cured. Due to the nature of the problem treatment to date has been very difficult to treat and a lot of medicated shampoos contain nothing more than moisturizer (to avoid flakes) or adhesion factor. (to stick flakes to the head) We believe Neem to be one if not the only treatment to tackle the disease and not the symptoms.

Treatment.
Apply scalpol or neem oil to the scalp at night. In the morning wash hair with Neem shampoo.

Suggested Products: - Scalpol, Shao shampoo, Neem oil (de-odorized is certainly more user friendly)

Head Lice

Head lice are often spread among schoolchildren by contact clothing or hairbrushes. It is contagious among family members and so all should be treated at the same time. Bedclothes, hairbrushes, Hats and other garments should be steeped and washed.

Head Lice and Neem
Neem has hormone mimics that interfere with the life cycle of parasites, inhibit their ability to feed and prevent the eggs from hatching.

Shampoos incorporating neem followed by neem-based cream to the hair and scalp has proven to work in clearing the lice on both adults and children with no side effects.

This year Dr Mary Tatner and Mari Dudgeon of the University of Glasgow investigated the prevalence of head lice in school children, and the effectiveness of Neem Seed extract in treating lice. School nurses examined the heads of 581 children in 6 Glasgow schools, and found that more than 1 in 20 children had head lice. The researchers then tested Neem Seed extract in the laboratory and found that it killed 90% of the lice in 22 hours. This means that parents using a shampoo containing Neem Seed extract are likely to see a result within a day.

Neem extracts have been shown to rid the body of head lice in three very important and distinct ways. First of all Neem contains hormone mimics that interfere with the life cycle of parasites. Secondly Neem inhibits the parasites ability to feed, giving rise to the term anti-feedant. Finally and very importantly Neem prevents louse eggs from hatching.

Using Neem shampoo regularly helps to keep the hair healthy. It may also help prevent infestation with lice.

During school term keep a check on children's hair. Fine comb regularly to insure there are no lice or eggs. Avoid using harsh chemicals on young children.

An indication that lice are present is if the child's hair is dull and lifeless, if the child is scratching and irritable or if you see anything on the scalp.

Warning....

Conventional Head Lice treatments contain toxic chemicals

Could a chemical be that deadly?

For fear of attack by Saddam Hussein, most Israeli hospitals have antidotes to a deadly nerve gas developed by Nazi chemists which contains organophosphate(OP). A closely related compound is the insecticide found in head lice lotions. The same family of insecticides is suspected of driving prion diseases like BSE and CJD. For example: the vast bulk of the cattle found staggering around in British fields with their brains burned out, have been treated for warble-fly with these insecticides..

Side effects in humans using these insecticide lotions range from slight irritation to the eyes and skin to serious skin disorders, respiratory conditions, blood disorders, neurological disorders and even death.

A study in 1997 by the Health & Safety Executive and Dr Vyan Howard of Liverpool University found that head lice insecticides used on children contain enough organophosphate to put them five times over government safety limits, and that repeated use may damage the nervous system.
Health hazards
All of the pesticides used against head lice are toxic at high levels and there is concern about frequent exposure to lower levels. Malathion is a case in point - many health effects have been noted from malathion and its contaminants or breakdown products. Heavy exposure brings on symptoms of dizziness, excessive salivation, urination, headaches, nausea, diarrhea, convulsions, muscle weakness, incoordination, abdominal cramps, slowed heart beat, respiratory depression, paralysis, and coma. There are reports of deaths, poisoning, intestinal disorders, leukemia, near sightedness and kidney damage after aerial spraying of malathion. From animal and in vitro tests, there is evidence of intestinal disorders, weakened immune system, lung damage, birth defects, chromosome damage, behavioral and reproductive effects..

From the Californian Division of Communicable Disease Control
Lindane, used since the 1950s, is both the least effective and, by far, the most toxic. Even though the "old is standby" Kwell® is no longer produced, other lindane-based products are still available and still require a prescription. Since 1983, the NPA has maintained that the potential toxicity of lindane far outweighs its possible benefits as a pediculicide. Among the adverse effects reported to the NPA's register are seizures, behavioral changes, neuromuscular complaints, attention deficit disorders, chronic skin eruptions, and death. It was stated in California Morbidity (April 17, 1987, #14) that: "Given that 1% lindane shampoo (Kwell®, etc.) is less effective and has more potential toxicity than the easily available alternatives, there is no reason to continue prescribing this material for the control of head lice in California."

Lindane
Prepared in the context of cooperation between the International Programme on Chemical Safety and the Commission of the European Communities..
LONG-TERM PSYCHOLOGICAL AND
NEUROLOGICAL COMPLICATIONS
OF LINDANE POISONING
The following case is of an individual who was acutely intoxicated with Kwell, an anti-scabies agent, which employs lindane as its active ingredient. Although her initial symptoms were indicative of severe lindane poisoning, what makes the case important are the prolonged and clearly related neurological and psychological symptoms that she experienced for 20 months following her initial poisoning..
Lindane isn't cool for the environment
Lindane is an ingredient in prescription products used to treat head lice and the skin mite scabies. Lindane head lice shampoos are often called KWELL. No matter what they are called, they are harmful to the environment. When misused, they can actually hurt kids. Safe and effective alternatives to lindane are available, and prevention and early detection techniques for head lice may be used.

What does the Merck Index say about lindane?
According to the Centennial Edition of the Merck Index, poisoning with lindane may occur by ingestion, inhalation, or skin absorption; possible acute symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, weakness, convulsions, dyspnea, cyanosis circulatory collapse. The Merck Index states "Lindane and other hexachlorocyclohexane isomers may reasonably be anticipated to be carcinogens."

Treatment.
The best way to use Neem against lice is as follows:
Massage with Endlice or Neem oil.
Leave it on overnight,
Next Morning comb the hair with a nit comb, thoroughly cleaning the whole scalp. This should clear the head, then Shampoo in a Neem based product and at the end of the day repeat the complete program for three days.

Suggested Products: - Endlice, Shao shampoo, Neem oil (de-odorized is certainly more user friendly)

Herpes (Cold Sores, Warts)

The highly contagious herpes simplex viruses cause a number of different disorders characterized by small, painful blisters on the skin and mucous membranes, most commonly on or around the lips or genital area. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is transmitted by contact with a blister.

Warts and Neem
Neem absorbs viruses and prevents them from infecting cells. Since warts are caused by viruses, neem is effective in treating them. To treat the wart, cover it with whole neem leaves or soak the gauze portion of a small bandage with neem oil and place it over the wart. Change the bandage and reapply daily. After a week, check the area to determine the progress of the treatment.

Treatment. Application of neem oil, neem-based cream, or Blitz stick to the affected area is recommended along with Neem capsules or tea. Bathe and shampoo with Neem based products and apply Neem lotion/cream. Neem capsules will help combat the problem at source.

Suggested Products: - Neem oil, Blitz stick, Aru cream, Shao shampoo, Bubble bath, and capsules.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that generally appears as patches of raised red skin covered by a flaky white buildup. Although the exact cause is unknown, psoriasis is believed to be related to faulty signals sent by the body's immune system. These signals accelerate the growth cycle in skin cells, which pile up on the surface when the body can't shed them fast enough.
Psoriasis is not contagious-no one can "catch" it from another person. It has a genetic component that makes certain people more likely to develop it, but often an external or environmental "trigger" is necessary to make psoriasis appear. These triggers may include emotional stress, injury to the skin, some types of infection and reaction to certain drugs.

The most common form of psoriasis is called "plaque psoriasis"-about 80 percent of people with psoriasis have this type. Plaque psoriasis can appear on any skin surface, although the knees, elbows, scalp, trunk and nails are the most common locations. There are several other types of psoriasis, and between 10 percent and 30 percent of people with psoriasis also develop a related form of arthritis, called psoriatic arthritis.

Neem and Psoriasis
Neem has an almost magical effect on chronic skin conditions that fail to respond to conventional treatments. Acne, psoriasis, eczema, and ringworm are conditions that are effectively treated by a Neem preparation.

Psoriasis:
In clinical studies Neem extracts and oil were found to be as effective as coal tar and cortisone in treating psoriasis. However there were none of the usual side effects accompanying the use of Neem as there was with Coal tar and cortisone. When applied to the skin, Neem extracts and oil removed the redness and itching while improving the condition of the skin for the duration of the treatment.

Some things that may help:

  • Avoiding spicy and processed food.
  • Not using perfumed soaps.
  • Not using harsh household chemical
  • cleaning products.
  • Avoiding stressful situations. Avoiding latex and rubber gloves.
  • Avoiding certain perfumes.
  • Avoiding soft drinks especially ones with Aspartame.
  • Avoiding moisturizers with strong perfumes, lanolin and alcohol.
  • Get to know your own body and it's reactions to various substances.

Clinical studies exist on fish oil supplements and evening primrose oil, both of which produced some good results in psoriasis

Sunlight can be a valuable treatment option for people with psoriasis. Eighty percent of the people who get regular daily doses of sunlight enjoy improvement or clearing of their psoriasis.

Managing disease and restoring health involves assessing the whole person to understand the nature of the imbalance. If you are only prescribed medication without looking at your diet or your lifestyle then the condition will only be masked over rather than tackled.
Moisturizing the skin is very important.

Psoriasis of the Scalp
In scalp psoriasis, areas of the skin grow much faster than normal and form red, scaling patches. Psoriasis is a problem only because it itches and can be unsightly. It is not contagious. Although it is not dangerous, scalp psoriasis can be persistent and difficult to treat.

Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis is a specific type of arthritis that develops in approximately 23 percent of people who have psoriasis. The disease can be difficult to diagnose, particularly in its milder forms.

Stress can trigger or aggravate psoriasis in some people. Therefore, practices that promote relaxation and stress reduction is a good idea for people with psoriasis.

The best diet is the one that makes the individual feel the best, because people with psoriasis benefit from a healthy lifestyle and eating habits, just like everybody else. Many people report that certain foods either aggravate or improve their skin.

Neem is effective on serious Dermatological conditions

Dr. H.S. Puri, a leading clinical research scientist in India made the following statement:

"SKIN CREAMS INCORPORATING NEEM OIL CAN CONTROL PSORIASIS, ECZEMA, ACNE, DERMATITIS AND OTHER SKIN PROBLEMS BETTER THAN ANY OTHER KNOWN PRODUCT"

Neem is clinically proven to be an effective analgesic and anti-inflammatory, relieving both pain and inflammation. These qualities along with the above mentioned properties of Neem is what makes Neem so effective against serious skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne, dermatitis, shingles, jock itch, athletes foot, ring worm, scabies, lice, Candida, and more. Lotions and creams containing Neem oil and Neem leaf extracts are effective externally and Neem leaf extract, capsules, and teas are useful internally because they effectively detoxify the blood of impurities that are the source of skin problems.

Treatment. Bathe in Neem oil and bubble bath; use lotion as needed during the day and Blitz stick for stubborn areas or broken skin.

Suggested Products: - Neem oil, bubble bath, shao shampoo, Neem mist or antiflare lotion. Blitz stick, Neem soap.

Eczema
Eczema also known, as dermatitis is a distressing condition. Individuals with the eczema suffer from dry itchy skin, but in its severe form the skin can become broken and raw. Eczema is not contagious
A
lmost any part of the skin surface with the exception of protected areas, such as the diaper region, can be involved. When the disease starts in infancy, the rash tends to be localized on the face and scalp. The main problem in eczema is that the skin loses water and dries out causing intense itching. If the child would not scratch, the skin would probably show little or no changes. The scratching is most severe at night and the skin becomes raw and may begin to ooze.
Some known aggravating factors include:
* The frequent use of soaps and other cleansing products that tend to remove natural oil from the skin
* Direct contact with animals (especially their saliva or fur) and indirect contact with animal dander.
* Rapid changes of temperature and humidity.
* Rough, scratchy, or tight clothing, especially clothes made of wool or stiff fabrics.
* Emotional upset can trigger a episode of eczema.
Keeping the fingernails short and using cotton gloves can minimize scratching at night. For infants and younger children, knee-high socks are better than gloves, because they are harder to accidentally pull off during sleep.

There are several different types of eczema, many of which look similar but have very different causes and treatments. It is very important to see a general practitioner in the first instance, who may make a referral to a specialist dermatologist for further diagnosis.

Topical steroid ointments and creams are frequently used to treat flare-ups of eczema. Steroids are potent drugs. However, these medications can cause significant side effects if used over a long period of time and should be administered only on the advice of the child's physician.

Atopic eczema
Atopic eczema is the commonest form of eczema and is closely linked with asthma and hayfever. It can affect both children and adults, usually running in families. One of the most common symptoms of atopic eczema is its itchiness (or pruritis), which can be almost unbearable. Other symptoms include overall dryness of the skin, redness and inflammation. Constant scratching can also cause the skin to split, leaving it prone to infection. In infected eczema the skin may crack and weep ('wet' eczema).

Allergic contact dermatitis
Develops when the body's immune system reacts against a substance in contact with the skin. The allergic reaction often develops over a period of time through repeated contact with the substance. For example, an allergic reaction may occur to nickel, which is often found in earrings, belt buckles and jeans buttons. Reactions can also occur after contact with other substances such as perfumes and rubber. In order to prevent repeated reactions it is best to prevent contact with anything that you know causes a rash.

Irritant contact dermatitis
This is a type of eczema caused by frequent contact with everyday substances, such as detergents and chemicals, which are irritating to the skin. It most commonly occurs on the hands of adults and can be prevented by avoiding the irritants and keeping the skin moisturised.

Infantile seborrhoeic eczema
A common condition affecting babies under one year old, the exact cause of which is unknown. Also referred to as cradle cap, it usually starts on the scalp or the nappy area and quickly spreads. Although this type of eczema looks unpleasant, it is not sore or itchy and does not cause the baby to feel uncomfortable or unwell. Normally this type of eczema will clear in just a few months, though the use of moisturizing creams and bath oils can help to speed this along.

Adult seborrhoeic eczema
Characteristically affects adults between the ages of 20 and 40. It is usually seen on the scalp as mild dandruff, but can spread to the face, ears and chest. The skin becomes red, inflamed and starts to flake. This condition is believed to be caused by a yeast growth. If the condition becomes infected, treatment with an anti-fungal cream may be necessary.

Varicose eczema
Varicose eczema affects the lower legs of those in their middle to late years, being caused by poor circulation. Commonly the skin around the ankles is affected, becoming speckled, itchy and inflamed. Treatment is with emollients and steroid creams. If left untreated, the skin can break down, resulting in an ulcer.
Discoid eczema
Is usually found in adults and appears suddenly as a few coin shaped areas of red skin, normally on the trunk or lower legs. They become itchy and can weep fluid. Usually discoid eczema is treated with emollients (and steroid creams if necessary).

Eczema:
In the case of eczema clinical studies demonstrate that even the application of weaker Neem leaf extracts effectively eased the acute conditions of eczema. Using a Soap or shampoo containing Neem oil can easily relieve the itching and redness of eczema. For specific areas of intensity on your skin apply Neem lotion after bathing and/or shampooing with Neem oil products.

Neem has a broad range of beneficial effects has on skin. This makes it one of the better treatments for eczema. Neem moisturizes and protects the skin while it helps heal the lesions, scaling and irritation. It is cooling on the affected areas.

Neem does not have the same side effects as prescribed medications and injections or cause liver damage. It is probably the best and safest alternative for treating eczema. Neem skin cream offers moisturizing, regenerative and restructuring properties to dry and damaged skin.

Treatment. Bathe in Neem oil and bubble bath; use lotion as needed during the day and Blitz stick for stubborn areas or broken skin.

Suggested Products: - Neem oil, bubble bath, shao shampoo, mist or antiflare lotion. Blitz stick, Neem soap.

Scabies

Scabies is a contagious disorder of the skin caused by very small, insects or mites called the Human Itch mite or Scabies itch mite. The female insect burrows into the skin where she lays 1 - 3 eggs daily. A very small, hard to see, zigzag blister usually marks the trail of the insect. Other more obvious symptoms are an intense itching (especially at night) and a red rash that can occur at the area that has been scratched.

The most common locations for scabies are on the sides of fingers, between the fingers, on the backs of the hands, on the wrists, heels, elbows, armpits, inner thighs and around the waist (belt line).

One of the great problems with scabies always has been misdiagnosis.

Scabies is spread by personal contact, e.g., by shaking hands or sleeping together or by close contact with infected articles such as clothing, bedding or towels. It is usually found where people are crowded together or have frequent contact, and is most common among school children, families, roommates, and sexual partners. Scabies can be spread by the insect itself or by the egg. Prompt action is required to rid a person of the insects and eggs.

Sarcoptes scabiei is a form of mite, which burrows beneath the skin and lays eggs which hatch in as little as three to four days and the whole life cycle is completed in approximately 14 days. The infestation causes pimples due to an allergic reaction to the faeces and carcasses left behind.

Infection and severe discomfort follows and because of the habitat (beneath the skin) this complaint causes even more problems due to the toxicity of the treatment currently used to penetrate and treat the disease. Trials as listed below have revealed that Neem is probably the most effective scabies treatment and also the safest.

Scabies Information
The use and efficacy of Azadirachta indica ADR ('Neem') and Curcuma longa ('Turmeric') in scabies. A pilot study.
Charles V, Charles SX.
Medical and Cancer Research and Treatment Centre, Nagercoil, India.

In the Ayurvedha and Sidha system of medicine (Indian system of medicine) Azadirachta indica ADR ('Neem') and Curcuma longa ('Turmeric') has been used for healing chronic ulcers and scabies. The 'Neem' and 'Turmeric' was used as a paste for the treatment of scabies in 814 people. In 97% of cases cure was obtained within 3 to 15 days of treatment. We find that this is a very cheap, easily available, effective and acceptable mode of treatment for the villagers in the developing countries.
This disease does not indicate lack of hygiene and can be contracted quite easily by contact with humans or dogs. Scabies known in the canine world as mange mite accounts for deaths of many foxes each year. This mite can live for days in bedding or clothing etc. and washing does not always provide the temperature to cleanse the said items.

Scabies Medication
Although there are several prescription medicines to treat this problem, they are very harsh to the skin and body and may be dangerous to use because of their strong chemicals - Neem is a gentler scabies medication (A number of effective treatments were based on organo phosphates, which was developed as nerve gas.) These methods often fail to cure the problem or even relieve the itch. Quite often the symptoms are suppressed for a time, but as soon as the treatment is stopped, the itch is back because the mites have not been eradicated. It is recommended that clothes, which have been worn during infection be treated or isolated (refuse bag 10 days) to avoid re-infestation. Dogs must be treated, as this may have been the initial source of the problem. Cat lovers/owners will be pleased to hear that there is no known case of a feline variety of mite affecting humans.
It must be noted that use of conventional prescription treatments on people suffering from other forms of skin disease such as Psoriasis and Eczema can produce some very unpleasant results.
Neem Genie research resulted in development of a full treatment pack for the eradication of scabies from the household.

Treatment.
Rub Neem oil directly onto the infected areas leave for 30 mins and then bathe in Neem oil and bubble bath. Dry and apply aru cream or scalpol. Take two leaf capsules a day for 10 days.

Suggested Products: - Neem oil, bubble bath, shao shampoo, Aru cream, Neem soap, Scalpol, Neem capsules.

Shingles

Neem and Shingles
Topical applications of a neem-based cream should be applied to the affected area at least three times a day or as often as needed
Herpes zoster, often known as shingles, is characterized by a painful crop of blisters that erupts along the path of a nerve. The rash commonly occurs on only one side of the body and usually affects the skin on the chest, abdomen, or face. In older people, discomfort may continue for months after the rash has disappeared. This prolonged pain is called postherpetic neuralgia.

Treatment.
Apply aru Neem three times a day or as often as is needed. Take two Neem capsules daily for 20 Days.

Suggested Products: - Aru cream, neem capsules.

Encephalitis

One of the most impressive accomplishments of Neem against parasites is its effectiveness against encephalitis. In a paper delivered to the American Chemical Society at its annual meeting in March 1993 R.O. Larson describes how an outbreak of Japanese encephalitis in India was eradicated. This was accomplished by giving children two doses of crushed Neem leaves daily.

Treatment.
Two Neem capsules or tea taken daily

Suggested Products: - Neem capsules, Neem leaf.

Toothache, Oral Health, Bad Breath, Mouth Ulcers, Gum Disease

Neem's pain-relieving compounds will temporarily reduce the discomfort of a toothache. The vasodilation and anti-inflammatory compounds will reduce the pressure on nerves that can cause the toothache. To reduce the pain and inflammation, put a few drops of neem leaf extract gums near the site of the pain.

Personal testimony
I was developing an abscess on a wisdom tooth, which was very painful. I applied a small amount of neem leaf powder to the gum, this relieved the pain and reduced the inflammation. The gumboil healed within hours.

Pyorrhea and Neem
Pyorrhea is characterized by an inflammation of the gums and membranes that cover the roots of the teeth. People lose more teeth over age 35 because of this disease than any other cause.

In a German study of 70 patients with pyorrhea of varying stages, after just 5 to 10 treatments with a neem-based toothpaste and mouthwash there was significant improvement.

Bleeding gums had healed and the secretion from pockets around the teeth had stopped. The bluish colored gums returned to a healthy pale pink color
(Zeppenfeldt, undated).

Neem bark is more active than the leaves against certain bacteria and is considerably less bitter making it the neem ingredient of choice in toothpastes and mouthwashes (Vashi and Patel, 1988).

Scientific Studies with Neem and Gingivitis
Neem bark extracts can reduce the ability of some streptococci to colonize tooth surfaces (Wolinsky and Mania, 1996), (Patel and Venkatakrishna, 1988). Gingivitis has been prevented or even reversed with regular use of neem toothpaste and mouthwash (Elvin-Lewis, 1980).

One person even reported a reversal of the loss of gum tissue by chewing fresh neem leaves. Scientists believe that antibacterial compounds and Neem's ability to improve the immune response in the gums and tissues of the mouth account for these results.

What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is a form of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease involves inflammation and/or infection that results in destruction of the tissues that support the teeth, including the gingiva (gums), the periodontal ligaments, and the tooth sockets (alveolar bone).

PROPERTIES OF NEEM ACTIVE TOOTHPASTE
In our opinion this toothpaste epitomises the many qualities of Neem in one product.

Neem kills the bacteria that cause tooth decay.
Neem kills the bacteria that cause Pyorrhea and Gingivitis. {Gum disease}
Neem prevents cell adhesion and helps to control plaque
Neem is very effective in areas of pain control and removal of mouth ulcers.

All the staff at Neem Genie use N/A we know of no other toothpaste with these qualities.
Neem Active contains bark extract, which has unique properties and is not as bitter as other products from the tree.
Neem Active toothpaste is competitively priced, flavoured with spearmint and is pleasant to use.

A percentage of the proceeds from Neem Active toothpaste goes towards the planting of more trees.

Trials recently conducted by Neem Genie found that in cases of mouth ulcerations, which had been under treatment for as long as twelve months responded and cleared within three weeks.
Warning !!! Pain should cease immediately but should the ulceration not clear within a few days see your dentist as there could be a SERIOUS underlying problem.

Neem's pain-relieving compounds will reduce the discomfort of a toothache. The vasodilation and anti-inflammatory compounds will reduce the pressure on nerves that can cause the toothache.
Brushing with neem toothpaste after every meal and using a mouthwash with neem extract is recommended treatment for preventing and correcting gingivitis. For severe cases also take neem leaf capsules daily for one week.
Neem extracts have helped millions of people in south Asia to avoid cavities despite a very limited access to modern dental care.

Regular brushing with neem toothpaste and rinsing with neem mouthwash destroys cavity-causing bacteria, enhances mouth immunity, prevents tartar/plaque buildup and subsequently freshens breath.
Neem toothpastes and mouthwashes prevent cavities, heal gum diseases and rejuvenate the tissues of the mouth. (Lorenz, 1976).

Neem active toothpaste has brought results beyond our wildest dreams.

Neem's effectiveness against Periodontal Disease
Throughout India and South East Asia hundreds of millions of village people use Neem twigs and leaves to brush their teeth, and keep their gums free of disease and infection even though they have limited access to modern dental care. The ancient Ayurvedic practice of using Neem to heal and rejuvenate gum tissue and to prevent cavities and gum disease is verified in modern clinical studies.
Studies showed that Neem bark is more active then the leaves against certain bacteria and that Neem based toothpastes and mouth washes significantly improved Pyorrhea, at various stages, in 70 patients. In another study Neem toothpaste prevented and even reversed gingivitis.

Bad Breath and Neem
The usual reason for chronic bad breath is bacteria, infections or gastric upset.

Neem toothpastes and mouthwashes contain proven antibacterial and anti-viral compounds that can stop bad breath where it originates.

The most common site of bad breath causing bacteria is the back of the tongue. The bacteria that cause bad breath can form a film that is difficult to gargle away and must be either scraped or brushed away. Once the film is removed and the bacteria are exposed neem extract will easily destroy the bacteria.

If the cause is infection of the mouth, brushing the teeth and gums with neem toothpaste and rinsing afterward with neem extract will kill the infection and promote healing. For bad breath caused by gastric upset, ingestion of neem leaves or fresh seed kernel is traditionally recommended to relieve the upset and correct any acid imbalance.

Treatment. Brush two or three times daily if possible or use mouthwash after every meal. For acute cases take two Neem capsules daily, one morning and one at night.

Suggested Products: - Neem active toothpaste, Neem 40 mouthwash, Neem leaf capsules, Neem leaf.

Cholesterol

Neem leaf extracts reduced cholesterol levels significantly in recent studies. Alcoholic extract of neem leaves reduced serum cholesterol by about 30% beginning two hours after administration and kept the level low for an additional four hours until the test ended. (Chattopadhyay, et al, 1992).

Since neem is a safe herb when used in low doses, drinking neem tea for a month to stabilize cholesterol levels may be recommended.

For those that would only need small reductions or for after eating an exceptionally fatty meals neem tea as an after meal drink may be an alternative.

Treatment. Neem capsules or tea taken twice daily of after meals.

Suggested Products: - Neem capsules, Neem leaf.

Neem for Wrinkles

Creams containing neem oil can be used to prevent wrinkles by providing a natural skin protectant and moisturizer to the skin.

Antibacterial compounds in neem protect the skin while immune stimulating compounds help deeper layers of the skin fight any pathogens below the surface.
These neem compounds help healthy skin retain its suppleness (Puri, 1993). After washing and drying the skin, rub a few drops of neem based cream on areas that are particularly susceptible to drying and wrinkles.

To supplement the beneficial effects of neem oil, apply a face pack made from neem bark. As the face pack dries, the soothing compounds of neem bark are absorbed into the skin. This helps to reduce wrinkles and will make the skin feel smoother and appear younger. It is an astringent mixture that
tightens the skin and is particularly useful for hypersensitive people.

Treatment.
This is variable according to the size of the problem areas. May need local treatment i.e. moisturiser, or bathing for extensive coverage.

Suggested Products: - Neem oil, bubble bath, mist moisturizer, Aru cream, Neem soap.

Food Poisoning

Salmonella bacteria, the major culprit in food poisoning, has been shown to be killed by neem extracts (Patel, 1962, 1965).
Although prevention is the best way to avoid food poisoning, once it has been ingested, neem is a viable option for reducing the length and severity of the attack.

Oral doses of neem leaf teas or capsules will soothe the upset stomach, help the body rid itself of the bacteria and provide relief from many of the miserable symptoms.

Suggested Products: - Neem capsules, Neem leaf.

Nappy Rash

If your baby already has nappy rash, wash the baby's skin with neem shampoo or soap and dry with a clean towel. Then apply a neem-based cream or neem leaf powder to soothe the baby's skin, prevent nappy rash and to keep the baby's skin protected from moisture.

All babies get a red or sore bottom from time to time, even with frequent diaper changes and careful cleaning.

Some common reasons for nappy rash include:

Irritation from a new product.
Your baby's skin may have come into contact with something that irritated it. Possibilities include disposable wipes, a new brand of nappy, or a new brand of detergent, fabric softener or bleach used in the laundry. If you suspect one of these, change to a brand that hasn't bothered the baby before.

Generally, you'll have better results if you use products that have few additives.

Chemicals in new clothes.
Wash all new clothing before your baby wears it for the first time.

Sensitive skin.
If your baby's skin is sensitive change nappy frequently, washing the area with clear water each time. Allow your baby's bottom to air dry. And use a neem soothing ointment any time pinkness occurs.

Bacterial or yeast infection.
These can cause an irritating skin rash and can be treated with a strong Neem cream such as aru.
Contact your doctor if your baby has a rash that's stubborn and lasts more than a few days.

Select snap-on plastic pants instead of those with elastic binding for better air circulation.

Treatment.
A soothing Neem lotion such as Neem Mist can be applied as prevention and a stronger cream (Aru) as a treatment. Bathing in Neem bubble bath will also help the general condition of the skin and also act as a bacterial barrier. If there is no sign of improvement within two days consult your doctor.

Suggested Products: - Neem bubble bath, mist moisturizer, Aru cream, Neem soap.

Syphilis

Neem has anti-spirochaetal properties so that it works as both as a preventative measure and in the treatment of primary, secondary and tertiary stages of syphilis (Siddiqui and Mitra, 1945); (Bhandari and Mukerjii, 1959); (Puri, 1993).

Neem creams used as a vaginal lubricant or birth control may be effective against the syphilis spirochete and may prevent contraction of the disease. As with gonorrhea, creams containing at least 25 percent neem oil were used.

Drinking neem tea made three times per day or four capsules a day for two weeks is recommended as treatment.

Treatment. Neem oil can be mixed with aru cream or mist lotion to provide a very potent treatment. See your doctor.

Suggested Products: Neem capsules, Neem leaf, Neem oil, Aru cream, Mist lotion.

Gonorrhea

Neem creams used as a vaginal lubricant or birth control may be effective against the gonococcus bacteria (Garg, et al, undated).

Using a neem-based lubricating cream may be helpful in reducing the chance of contracting the disease. Lubricating creams containing at least 25 percent neem oil were used in the tests, so lesser percentages may not provide the protection witnessed in clinical trials.

Traditional treatment after infection calls for three cups of neem leaf tea daily for two weeks.

Treatment. Neem oil can be mixed with aru cream or mist lotion to provide a very potent treatment. See your doctor.

Suggested Products: Neem capsules, Neem leaf, Neem oil, Aru cream, Mist lotion.

Kidney Problems & Blood Disorders.

As guardians of the blood's purity, kidneys filter out the body's toxins.

When filtering out tremendous amounts of these toxins after an illness, the kidneys can become overworked. They can also be adversely affected by high blood pressure and infections in the blood.

To prevent kidney problems, drink neem tea or take neem leaf capsules with barley water at the onset of infection or for high blood pressure (Puri, 1993). This helps the body fight infections and lowers blood pressure,
allowing the kidneys to perform under less stress.

Neem has been a major blood tonic and blood purifier in the systems of medicine found in India and Pakistan. In an analysis of 36 plant drugs attributed with blood purifying properties, neem was found to have the
widest range of beneficial effects (Vohora, 1986).

It is believed to remove toxins from the blood and promote a healthy circulation (Chattopadhyay, et al, 1992a).

Small amounts of neem leaf extracts have been found to protect the liver from damage when toxic agents were used to induce hepatocellular necrosis (Chattopadhyay, et al, 1992b).

Neem also can oxidize the blood to promote healing (Etkin, 1981).

Treatment.
One capsule or cup of Neem tea taken twice daily.

Suggested Products: Neem capsules, Neem leaf.

Earache

Neem acts to relieve the localized pain receptors, reduce inflammation and kill bacteria that can cause earaches.

Neem will treat eczema eruptions and infections in the ear channel.

Treatment.
Care must be must be taken when treating the ear channel as permanent damage can result from even minor mishaps. Neem oil or leaf extract is the product of choice. Do not dropper anything into the ear without a full examination as irreparable damage can be caused if the subject has a perforated eardrum. (even water) A cotton bud soaked in Neem oil or leaf extract will treat areas around the entrance to the ear. For more inaccessible or deeper areas insert a cotton wool plug soaked in oil, and leave for 2-3 mins and replace with another plug using leaf extract as this will evaporate and reach the inner areas. Remove excess oil/extract and be sure to use only damp plugs.

Suggested Products: Neem oil, Neem leaf.

Burns

Neem has been used for centuries to treat problems of the skin and to prevent infection (Singh, et al, 1979).

Neem reduces the pain, kills bacteria that can cause infection, stimulates the local immune system and promotes rapid healing with reduced scarring.

Burns are treated very effectively with a neem-based cream spread lightly on the affected area. Most minor burns can be treated successfully at home by following these steps:

  • Cool the burn.
  • Hold the burned area under cold running water for 15 minutes.
  • If impractical immerse it in cold water or cover with cold compresses.
  • Cooling the burn reduces swelling by carrying heat away from your skin.
  • Don't use ice to cool a burn because it can further damage your skin.
  • Don't use butter. Using butter on burned skin can further damage your skin and increase your risk of infection.
  • Moisturize.
  • Once a burn is completely cooled, apply a Neem lotion or cream.
  • It will help keep the burned area from drying out and may make the burn more comfortable as it heals.
  • Continue to apply the cream until the burn has healed completely.
  • Bandage the burn.
  • Cover the burn with a sterile gauze bandage.
  • Wrap the bandage loosely to avoid putting pressure on burned skin.
  • Bandaging helps keep air off the area and reduces pain.
  • Handle blisters with care.
  • Fluid-filled blisters help protect against infection, so don't break them.
  • If they do break, wash the area with mild soap and water and then apply an antibiotic ointment and gauze bandage.
  • Use over the counter pain relievers. If necessary, acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help relieve the pain of minor burns.
  • Without further treatment, most minor burns will usually heal in about one to two weeks. But make sure you monitor the burn for signs of infection.
  • Sunburns may also be treated with neem based creams.

Treatment.
Probably the best product available to control this type of pain. In our tests we have found that the Neem in the Blitz stick gives immediate relief from pain, the propolis / beeswax provide the perfect bacterial barrier and protection for small wounds. Neem Aru cream treats and provides relief with larger areas. Use Neem leaf extract to clean wound prior to redressing.

Suggested Products: - Blitz stick, aru cream, Neem leaf granules.

Heart Disease.

Blood Clots and Neem
Neem compounds can reduce blood clotting which often close blood vessels and cause heart attacks. Occasional prophylactic use of neem tea may help keep the blood free of excessive clotting.

Neem and high heart rates
Neem leaf extract exhibited anti-arrhythmic activity, returning to normal within eight minutes of administration, artificially induced arrhythmia.

Neem extracts can also decrease abnormally high heart rates. (Thompson and Anderson, 1978). Neem leaf tea several times a week may inhibit irregular heartbeats and help maintain normal heart rates.

Treatment. Neem capsules or tea may help in tandem with prescribed treatments. Check with your doctor. Neem lotion has proved very effective in the relief of itching caused by various prescribed treatments.

Suggested Products: - Neem capsules, Neem leaf and Neem mist.

Cancer

Herbalists throughout Southeast Asia have used the neem tree successfully for centuries to reduce tumors. Researchers in India, Europe and Japanhave now found that polysaccharides and limonoids found in neem bark, leaves and seed oil reduced tumors and cancers (Fujiwara, 1982); (Chatterjee,
1961); (Hartwell, 1983) and showed effectiveness against lymphocytic leukemia (Pettit, 1983).

In several patents issued in Japan hot water neem bark extracts showed remarkable effectiveness against several types of
tumors. (Shimizu et al, 1985) Several types of extract were tested at different doses and compared to the effectiveness of a standard
anti-canceragent.

Several of the extracts were equal to or better than the standard anti-cancer agent against solid tumors. When the tests were done using a more purified extract of neem bark, the results were even more impressive
against solid tumors. But the extracts tested were still very crude when compared to the extremely purified active compounds typically used in treating tumors. Further studies using truly pure active compounds are expected to produce results at least equal to the control.

Another researcher used an extract of neem leaves to prevent the adhesion of cancer cells to other cells in the body. (Udeinya, 1994) Without the ability to stick to other cells, cancers cannot spread through the body and are more easily destroyed by the body's own immune system or by other
treatments.

In general, neem is known for its ability to effect cancers. Injections of neem extract around tumors showed remarkable reduction in size in just a few weeks. Skin cancers may be particularly responsive to neem. A number of reports have been made by patients that skin cancers have disappeared after several months of daily application of a neem based cream.

Clinical research performed in Europe and India using the polysaccharides and limonoids found in Neem bark, leaves, and seeds demonstrated some remarkable effects against cancers. These compounds not only reduced tumors and cancers but were also effective against lymphocytic leukemia. An amazing reduction in tumor size was reported when Neem extracts were injected around the tumors.

Notes

Dear Readers,

Hi!
I am an ayurvedic doctor working at A.I.I.M.S , New Delhi as a research fellow in breast cancer clinic. We are using neem very extensively in our wound clinic and have recently started its use in breast cancer clinic. I am very much impressed/convinced by the medicinal properties of neem in curing cancer (as studied in ayurvedic treatises like charakh samhita, sushruta samhita etc.).

I recommend my patients who are suffering from breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancer to chew 8-10 neem leaves early in the morning with lukewarm water on an empty stomach. I have observed that their white blood cells count had increased considerably.

Neem being a depurative purifies the blood and being an astringent decreases the body heat. I wish to cure my patients exclusively with neem since taking chemotherapy causes lots of side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, alopecia and fever. It is very painful also and most important aspect is the cost factor which sometimes makes the patient think twice whether to go for it or not.

I am planning to suggest/convince my patients to adapt neem as a primary treatment and to continue with chemotherapy if he/she likes.

I would appreciate if their are any queries from any cancer patient and would be very happy to help.
With regards,
Dr. Preeti kachroo

Another property of neem extract is to inhibit and prevent adhesion of cancer cells to our bodies. Without adhesion, they cannot root and grow and are more easily destroyed by the immune system or other cancer treatments.

Anecdotal evidence shows that injections around tumors show tumor reduction as well as patients reporting that skin cancers disappear after a few months of daily application of neem-based cream.

AIDS

By enhancing the cellular immune response most pathogens can be eliminated before they cause the ill feeling associated with disease.

This mechanism could also help in diseases that involve the immune system, like AIDS.
Taking neem leaf or bark powder every other day or drinking a mild neem tea will enhance antibody production and the body's cell-mediated immune response, helping to prevent infections.

Neem has immuno-stimulating properties for both the lymphocytic and cell-mediated immune systems. When human white blood cells infected with HIV were cultured with neem extracts, the production of viral proteins dropped dramatically. Dr. Upadhyay and Dr. Berre'-Sinousi, (one of the scientists who identified the AIDS virus), believe the neem extracts block production of viral proteins thereby stopping replication of the virus.

Studies of the effects of neem bark and neem leaf extracts show they significantly reduced the P-24 viral proteins and induced in vitro production of IL-1 interferon (Upadhyay, et al, 1993). The National Institutes of Health, in a preliminary study, reports encouraging results from in vitro tests where neem bark extracts killed the AIDS virus. (Larson, 1993).

Another possible effect neem may have on combating the AIDS virus is its apparent ability to enhance the cell-mediated immune response to infection. Using extracts made by soaking neem bark in water, Dr. Van Der Nat (Netherlands) determined that the extract produces a strong immune
stimulating reaction.

The neem bark extract stimulated lymphocyte function which increased production of MIF, a lymphokine that attaches macrophages and monocytes to infectious agents. (Upadhyay, et al, 1990).

Believed to be the first line of defense against HIV infection, (Beardsley,1992);
(Caldwell, 1994) neem's ability to enhance the cell-mediated immune response may provide protection from vaginal contraction of the disease if neem is used as a vaginal lubricant before intercourse. If even only
partially successful in preventing the spread of AIDS, until scientists develop a cure, neem could save countless lives.

In cases where HIV has not advanced to full-blown AIDS some of the patients appear to have the enhanced cell-mediated immune responses (Caldwell, 1994) that neem can help produce. However, once contracted, AIDS may be treated by ingesting neem leaf extracts, whole leaf, Neem capsules or by drinking neem tea.
Many of the complications associated with AIDS can also be treated with neem leaf or bark and creams.

Lesions of the skin or burning sensations have been successfully treated with neem leaves added to bath water and by creams containing neem oil.

Malaria

Neem leaf extract substantially increases the state of oxidation in red blood cells, preventing normal development of the malaria plasmodia (Etkin,1981).

An active ingredient in neem leaves, called Irodin A, is toxic to resistant strains of malaria, with 100 percent of the plasmodia dead in 72 hours with only a 1:20,000 ratio of active ingredients. (Abatan, 1986).

In other experiments alcoholic extracts of neem leaf performed almost as well as the more refined compounds. (Badam, 1987)

Malaria affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide and kills over two million people every year. It has even made an occasional appearance in North America due to introduction of new mosquito strains and travelers from malarial regions.
Malaria is transmitted from an infected person to a non-infected person by the bites of certain species of mosquito. The malarial gamete is sucked up from the infected person by the mosquito and
carried in its gut until the mosquito bites an uninfected person. The bite injects the gamete into the blood stream where it travels to the kidney to mature.

Neem can block the development of the gamete in an infected person. This
not only prevents the infected person from developing malaria but also stops
the disease from spreading. (Jones et al, 1994)

Two other compounds found in neem leaves called gedunin, a limonoid, and quercetin, a flavonoid, are at least as effective as quinine and chloroquine against malaria (Badam, 1987); (Ekanem, 1978); (Iwu, 1986); (Khalid, 1986, 1989); (Obasiki, 1986); (Rochanakij, 1985).

Another molecule, gedunin, an extract of neem bark, has also been found to be effective in treating malaria.(Khalid, 1989) Several studies show that neem extracts are effective even against chloroquine-resistant strains of the malaria parasite (Obih and Makinde, 1985); (Bray, et al, 1990).

The antimalarial effects of neem appear to be greater in the body than on a petri dish. This has led some to speculate that stimulation of the immune system is a major factor in neem's effectiveness against malaria.(Obasiki and Jegede-Fadunsin, 1986).

Neem also lowers the fever and increases the appetite thereby strengthening the body which aids in fighting the disease parasite and speeding recovery. (Abatan and Makinde, 1986).

Like the populations in malaria stricken areas who have access to neem some westerners familiar with neem often substitute an occasional neem leaf tea to drinking quinine on trips to malaria-infested areas of Africa and India as a preventive measure (Larson, 1993).

Drinking neem teas or simply chewing a couple of neem leaves a day reduces the possibility of contracting malaria.

Even though neem tea may be effective against malaria, a study done by Dr. Udeinya showed that water extracts are less effective than leaf extracts obtained by a water/acetone combination. (Udeinya, 1993)

Treatment.
Two Neem capsules or tea taken three times daily.

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that has been thought conquered until recently. New strains resistant to antibiotics are claiming increasing numbers of lives.

Those weakened by AIDS are particularly susceptible but, as an airborne disease, it is very contagious. Neem oil and its isolate nimbidol has shown antitubercular activity in sensitized guinea pigs (Murthy and Sirsi, 1958a).

Another isolate, nimbidin, was extremely effective at controlling the cause of tuberculosis in humans, Mycobacterium tuberculosis.(Chopra, 1958)

The leaf extract was the most effective form of neem and showed inhibition at dilutions of 1 part in 80,000.

Traditional Remedy
Traditional treatment involves drinking mild neem tea or breathing steamed neem leaves several times per day. Given the extract of leaves that proved most effective was derived through steam distillation the traditional treatment has been validated.

Pain

Inhibition of prostaglandin synthetase by limonoids (and/or polysaccharides) reduces perceived pain.

Both as topical applications and as oral medicines, Neem provides a low cost pain reliever and fever-reducing remedy. Neem leaf and bark extracts have been shown to be a more potent inhibitor of prostaglandin synthetase than acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and pethidine hydrochloride. (Okpako, 1977); (Pillai, 1978b); (Tandan, et al, 1990).

In some cases neem was effective at reducing pain for a significantly longer period than standard agents. Neem also reduces the activity of the central nervous system, which also reduces perceived pain (Debelmas, 1976).

According to a study led by N. Khanna, neem produces an analgesic effect upon the central and peripheral neural pathways. He also feels that both opioid and non-opioid receptors can be affected by neem.(Khanna et al, 1995)

Intestinal Worms

Neem teas are regularly used throughout the tropics to rid the body of intestinal worms (Singh, 1980).

There have been conflicting reports as to its effectiveness, but few who use neem for intestinal worms doubt the efficacy of neem. Neem leaf teas or capsules taken twice per day for one week is the usual method for eliminating these parasites from the body.

For childhood pinworms apply neem oil or cream to the anal opening for relief from itching.

One hour after taking aqueous leaf extracts or neem tea weak excitation and increased activity are seen, while decreased activity and lower muscular tone occur after five hours (Debelmas and Hache, 1976).

Hepatitis

A dangerous disease, hepatitis can be transmitted through blood or by ingesting contaminated food or water. Studies have indicated that neem extracts can block infection by the virus that causes it (Unander, 1992).

Prevention is recommended by drinking neem leaf tea after eating shellfish and after swimming in or drinking water potentially contaminated with sewage.

Viral hepatitis is a deadly disease with no effective remedy. Indian tests indicate that as much as 80% of the test cases showed significant improvement when treated with neem. (Wagh, 1988)

Suggested Products: - Neem capsules and Neem leaf.

Mononucleosis

Possibly related to hepatitis, "mono" should be treated with a mild neem tea three times a day for two weeks. The length and severity of the disease should be much improved if the regimen is followed.

Parasites

Historically, neem has been used to rid the body of all forms of parasites. Scientists have since proved that neem quickly kills external parasites and may kill internal parasites as well (Singh et al., 1979); (Obaseki and Jegede-Fadunsin, 1986); (Rochanakij, 1985).

There are numerous Ayurvedic preparations and home remedies using neem for this purpose throughout India. In fact, simple water extracts of neem leaves are preferred over standard treatments for lice and scabies.

Suggested Products: - Neem capsules, Neem oil, Neem bubble bath, Neem Mist lotion and Neem leaf.
